【 James’ Tips🔑】
Today’s tip is on the importance of maintaining coherence in the singularity or plurality of subject verb conjugation, probably the single most common mistake amongst second language English speakers in Hong Kong.

The following sample was written by a candidate whose target is 7.0 but is still getting a 6.0 or 6.5 at best due to these serious mistakes.
***********************
📝📝<<Student sample (as shown)>>
***********************
✅❎James’ comment on the student’s work:
Some range of complex sentence structures is evident
Some lexical resource is evident
Task achievement sound
Coherence and cohesion adequate
Grammatical accuracy generally communicable
However:
Singular plural dissonance
Incorrect third person singular
Which constitute rather serious mistakes being that they are such basic grammar criteria.
Absence of indefinite article

**********
For example:
Children’s life? No. Children’s, plural, lives, plural.
Letting… leads to. (singular, singular)
Allowing… contributes to (singular, singular)
A helper or a grandparent… who does (singular, singular)

Singular or plural subject verb congruence is a basic requirement above 6.5.

Today’s tip is on the importance of clear paragraphing.

The following example is by a typical Hong Kong DSE student who is targeting a 6.5 and has at the moment only a 5.0 approximately skill level.

***********************
➡Topic Question:

Many parents feel that competition should be encouraged among children. Others believe that other skills or qualities are more advantageous.
Discuss both these views and provide your own opinion.

***********************
📝📝<<Student sample (as shown)>>

***********************
✅❎James’ comment on the student’s work:
Parsing issues, ie, patient (adj.) or patience (n.)
Syntax and grammar issues.
Absence of linkers.
The essay is 1 giant block with no clear paragraphing.
The grammar has been corrected and linkers provided.

A better flow and progression of ideas, using only the same ideas in the essay, would have been:

Introduction: Paraphrase the topic; give a clear thesis statement.
Body 1: The benefits and drawbacks of competition.
Body 2: Cooperation as a superior alternative.
Conclusion: Reiterate why competition is not desired and why cooperation is a superior alternative.

【 James’ Tips🔑】

【 James’ Tips🔑】
“How can I get a high band (7.0) in IELTS?”, many students ask.
This week we will be looking at coherence and cohesion of the introduction as well as one of the body paragraphs in addition to correcting some of the more common ‘HK-English’ errors👀.
***********************
➡TASK 2 QUESTION
Some people choose a career according to the social status and salary it will give them. Others choose a career according to whether they will enjoy the work.
Which do you think is the best way to choose a career?
***********************
📝📝The following was submitted by a HK working professional attempting to achieve a 7.0. Can you spot the mistakes?🧐
“It is often said that ones should choose their career based on the job prospect and salary, while some select by the bases of one’s interest and enjoyment. This is a highly debate subject, and the issue is not entirely straight forward. This essay will discuss the debate and give a concluding view.
On the one hand, for the people who choose their career based on the job salary may need the job to satisfy their basic needs. For example, for mother who need to find a job which can get her enough paid to put food on the table and clothes for her child. Another type of people is that they select the career based on the social status, that is to allow them to have a satisfaction feeling out of the job rather then by the actual job itself. This can bee seen in higher job hierarchy where people tend to just enjoy the job because the status that have given to them.”
***********************
✅❎James’ comment on the student’s work:
Intro:
Spelling errors, parsing issues, passive voice, and failure to paraphrase. More spelling issues. “And” is not an adequately sophisticated display of complex sentence structures necessary for a 7.0. This introduction paragraph has no thesis, and no range. Typical of HK English.
Body 1:
Avoid boilerplate. Lexical resource somewhat limited. Subjects must be either singular or plural; no infinitives or you run the risk of a 5.5. Another is singular, thereby affecting the rest of the sentence. A noun cannot serve as an adjective for another noun. Parsing, conjugation, prepositional awareness etc. is all over the place. Only one instance of a complex sentence is made but this is overshadowed by the over-preponderance of solecism.

【 James’ Tips🔑】- Part 2

【 James’ Tips🔑】- Part 2

📝📝From student⬇:
Task 1 (IELTS 10 Test 2)

The following table collates information in the UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium and Sweden on the sales condition in Fairtrade-labelled banana and coffee in the year of 1999 as well as in 2004. In general, the sales of coffee in five European countries has risen from 1999 to 2004. In contrast, the sales of banana in Sweden and Denmark have a downward trend whereas other countries have an upward trend …

✏✏By James⬇:

The above IELTS Writing Task 1 Introduction paragraph, was recently written by a secondary student from Hong Kong currently studying in the UK, whose target is also a 7.0 in order to get into one of the top universities, yet like the overwhelming majority of Hong Kong students, has a very typical English level of approx. 5.5 fluctuating to 6.0. Slightly better than Hong Kong’s average in fact.
Can you spot the mistakes as well as well done techniques performed by the student? 🧐

***************************
➡➡Comments:

-Inaccurate preposition usage, particularly the use of HK-Chinglish’ number 1 favourite and almost always incorrect preposition of, “on”. No, it is a not a master key.
-The noun form was incorrectly used. It should have been plural when referring to the general sense.
-Unnatural lexis choice; amended.
-A summary linker was used, which is good. The definite article was dropped; not good.
-A main trend was given, very good. Most candidates are lazy and don’t do this.
-The perfect tense is used, which is very rare. Approximately only 1% of HK students can manage effective use of this tense.
-Descriptives are not adequately used.
-Another link; not bad.
-Lexical resource is “adequately” displayed, a polite word that means “not enough”.
-A single complex sentence is made. This is better than nothing, but not quite strong.
