This week we take a look at a common and persistent problem so many students are encountering in their attempt at securing a band 7.0 in the IELTS exam.
This particular essay is by a strong candidate who very nearly has a 7.0 yet unfortunately for them still makes one very critical and unforgiving error.
Can you spot the problem?

✅❎ James’ comment on the student’s work:
– Task Achievement solid.
– Coherence and cohesion apt.
– Grammatical range evident.
– Lexical resource demonstrates some flexibility.
– It is in the grammatical accuracy department where the candidate made only 2 fatal errors, but it must be understood that the higher the band the candidate targets, the smaller the margin of error.
– Coherence, of subject verb, in the singularity or plurality, is a must at the 7.0 and even a single instance of such a basic error, will lower a 7.0 down to a 6.5.
– No mistakes.

🔖 Elite 好消息分享，IELTS Appeal 成功例子！

我地有位同學仔申請 Appeal 成功啦！Bambi 一開始一心打算報幾堂就去考試，很明顯第一次的成績當然不太好。之後發現準備唔夠其後直接再報了最少堂數的課程。雖然他英文不算差但一般都知道IELTS也挺重視技巧，所以對於分數有要求的學生都明白碰運氣是不可靠。

最近他考到很不錯的成績，只是跟他的目標還差一點點。由於 Speaking 只有 6.5 而其它的papers都達標，所以Bambi決定申請 Appeal，最後由 6.5 去到 7，完成了他 All band 7的移民夢。📈

在這裏分享多少少… …Bambi 英文本身不錯所以他只報了最少課堂的課程，後來他心急要考到所以 Elite 針對了他的情況，給他一個最佳建議去安排上課。最後,他花了很短時間只上了 Writing 的小班加幾堂的單對單就考到理想成績。👍

Task Achievement adequate. Coherence and cohesion check.

Grammatical range conspicuously lacking.
“…and…” does NOT constitute a demonstration of a range of complex and sophisticated sentence structures, a red flag, used no less than 5 times; use in conjunction with, in tandem with, coupled with, not to mention, in addition to, as well as, etc, instead.
Grammatical accuracy is reasonably good.
There is at least one instance of solecism, or a broken illegible sentence, now corrected with proper complexity of range.
Some linking is used but could be improved. See amendments.
Some tense issues cause coherence issues.

Can you spot the positive and negative objective marking criteria?

Introduction, the most critical paragraph, has no range
2. Examples belong in the body paragraphs
3. Single plural incoherence issues
4. collocation
5. some range evident
6. determiners
7. inappropriate lexicons
8. good use of sign post language demonstrating an orderly progression of ideas
9. parsing issues
10. punctuation issues

🖍 Comments

Candidate demonstrates a reasonable degree of a range of complex sentence structures, despite some spelling, punctuation, parsing and lexical errors. In addition to the quantity of errors, the introduction and the conclusion paragraphs do not demonstrate enough grammatical range.
