【 James’ Tips🔑】

This week we take a glance at a more common essay that so many HK students are struggling with, right at the 6.5 cusp but no cigar.
This is written by a HK working professional currently targeting a 7.0 yet at the moment still hovers between 6.0 and more often 6.5.
Can you spot the reasons why?

✅❎James’ comment on the student’s work:
Despite some evidence of complexity of sentence structure, much repetition persists, indicating some inflexibility and limitation of skill level.
Some lexical resource is evident, a plus.
More linkers could be effectively employed in order to raise coherence.
Numerous instances of solecism or broken sentences persist, indicated and remedied by a star with appropriate complex conjunction usage.
Ultimately the candidate makes too many mistakes as well as is too repetitious with sentence structure, in particular, “so that” ad nauseum. This is not only an all too common ‘conjunction’, technically a compound one, but is boring to tears after 5 uses.
Some tense issues, past tense instead of present tense, as well as the all too common HK-Chinglish habit of using present progressive in lieu of present proper.
Try to understand, only the top 5% of candidates world wide, that is 1 person in 20, gets a 7.0. Thus, if you talk like everyone else talks, not to mention make the same mistakes everyone makes, then why do you deserve a 7.0? To distinguish yourself in the eyes of the examiner, you need to employ more sophisticated complexity as well as lexis with few or better yet no errors. Common sentences get, guess what, a common result, and 6.5, is a common result, only a hair better than the global average for females of 6.0.
