【 James’ Tips🔑】
“How can I get a high band (7.0) in IELTS?”, many students ask.
This week we will be looking at coherence and cohesion of the introduction as well as one of the body paragraphs in addition to correcting some of the more common ‘HK-English’ errors👀.

➡TASK 2 QUESTION
Some people choose a career according to the social status and salary it will give them. Others choose a career according to whether they will enjoy the work.
Which do you think is the best way to choose a career?

📝📝The following was submitted by a HK working professional attempting to achieve a 7.0. Can you spot the mistakes?🧐
“It is often said that ones should choose their career based on the job prospect and salary, while some select by the bases of one’s interest and enjoyment. This is a highly debate subject, and the issue is not entirely straight forward. This essay will discuss the debate and give a concluding view.
On the one hand, for the people who choose their career based on the job salary may need the job to satisfy their basic needs. For example, for mother who need to find a job which can get her enough paid to put food on the table and clothes for her child. Another type of people is that they select the career based on the social status, that is to allow them to have a satisfaction feeling out of the job rather then by the actual job itself. This can bee seen in higher job hierarchy where people tend to just enjoy the job because the status that have given to them.”

✅❎James’ comment on the student’s work:
Intro:
Spelling errors, parsing issues, passive voice, and failure to paraphrase. More spelling issues. “And” is not an adequately sophisticated display of complex sentence structures necessary for a 7.0. This introduction paragraph has no thesis, and no range. Typical of HK English.
Body 1:
Avoid boilerplate. Lexical resource somewhat limited. Subjects must be either singular or plural; no infinitives or you run the risk of a 5.5. Another is singular, thereby affecting the rest of the sentence. A noun cannot serve as an adjective for another noun. Parsing, conjugation, prepositional awareness etc. is all over the place. Only one instance of a complex sentence is made but this is overshadowed by the over-preponderance of solecism.
