Melody

【 James’ Tips🔑】

【 James’ Tips🔑】
This week we are delighted to ablate yet another instance of incorrigible HK-English, victim courtesy of the HK DSE education system.
The following essay was produced by a HK working professional targeting a 7.0 for immigration yet consistently hovering at best at 6.0. He has made the most common HK-English mistake with regards to prepositions, using the one “skeleton key” or master key preposition that HK second language speakers is a panacea for all
situations. It is not.
Do you know which preposition is the most commonly mistakenly used in HK?
It has been circled, 7 times in the essay.

📝📝<<Student sample (as shown)>>
***********************
✅❎James’ comment on the student’s work:
In addition to the aforementioned preposition error, the candidate makes a number of mistakes, parsing issues, confusing adverbs and adjectives, nouns and verbs, missing verbs, singular and plural incoherence or dissonance, absence of sign posting and discourse markers, inability to use auxiliary verbs correctly, starting sentences with “But” or “Yet”, gaucherie with the passive voice, and more subtle yet omnipresent, erroneous use of the present progressive tense in lieu of the present simple. Why do HK English second language speakers do this? Ask the DSE ‘teachers’.

【 James’ Tips🔑】

【 James’ Tips🔑】
“How can I get a high band (7.0) in IELTS?”, many students ask.
Continued from last week, we will be looking at coherence and cohesion of the second body paragraph as well as the conclusion paragraph in addition to correcting some of the more common ‘HK-English’ errors👀.
***********************
➡TASK 2 QUESTION
Some people choose a career according to the social status and salary it will give them. Others choose a career according to whether they will enjoy the work.
Which do you think is the best way to choose a career?
***********************
📝📝The following was submitted by a HK working professional attempting to achieve a 7.0. Can you spot the mistakes?🧐
“By contrast, for those who enjoy the entire nature of their job have a tendency of do a better job in their career. The reason is that for those who enjoy them would also spend more time on the job and would try to comprehend the work more thoroughly. Hence, this will leads to less error being make on the job. Furthermore, the worker will be more fond of the job and makes the work environment more energetic.

Overall, this seem to be advisable to choose career based on their job enjoyment rather then the salary. However, there are situations that individual prioritises those basic needs more, due to varies circumstantial reasons.”
***********************
✅❎James’ comment on the student’s work:
Some adequate linking a plus. Repeated copying of the topic lexicons fails to demonstrate lexical resource. More boilerplate. A lack of a range of sophisticated complex sentence structures is evidenced by the repeated use of “and”. Conjugation issues. Countable versus uncountable nouns issues. Passive voice issues. Arguments are sound but the grammar in both accuracy and more importantly range are rather limited. Basic conjugation of third person singular errors is an automatic 6.0 category mistake, ipso facto. More spelling errors. Note the proper example of a strong complex sentence in the corrections.

Which do you think is the best way to choose a career?
***********************
📝📝The following was submitted by a HK working professional attempting to achieve a 7.0. Can you spot the mistakes?🧐
“It is often said that ones should choose their career based on the job prospect and salary, while some select by the bases of one’s interest and enjoyment. This is a highly debate subject, and the issue is not entirely straight forward. This essay will discuss the debate and give a concluding view.
On the one hand, for the people who choose their career based on the job salary may need the job to satisfy their basic needs. For example, for mother who need to find a job which can get her enough paid to put food on the table and clothes for her child. Another type of people is that they select the career based on the social status, that is to allow them to have a satisfaction feeling out of the job rather then by the actual job itself. This can bee seen in higher job hierarchy where people tend to just enjoy the job because the status that have given to them.”
***********************
✅❎James’ comment on the student’s work:
Intro:
Spelling errors, parsing issues, passive voice, and failure to paraphrase. More spelling issues. “And” is not an adequately sophisticated display of complex sentence structures necessary for a 7.0. This introduction paragraph has no thesis, and no range. Typical of HK English.
Body 1:
Avoid boilerplate. Lexical resource somewhat limited. Subjects must be either singular or plural; no infinitives or you run the risk of a 5.5. Another is singular, thereby affecting the rest of the sentence. A noun cannot serve as an adjective for another noun. Parsing, conjugation, prepositional awareness etc. is all over the place. Only one instance of a complex sentence is made but this is overshadowed by the over-preponderance of solecism.
